After reading this, you’ll have a solid understanding of the top international universities in Munich and which programs are taught in English.

Studying in Munich

Germany has become a popular destination for studying abroad, with Munich alone hosting over 350,000 international students. The top reasons for this include Munich's high quality of life and the city’s role as an economic hub.

To top it off, German higher education is ridiculously affordable, even for international students. Combine that with a major international airport and a world-class public transportation system and you have the recipe for one hell of a study destination!

We’ll be focusing on the availability of English-taught degrees on Bachelor's and Master's levels and how well the university scores at world rankings.

1. Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU)

Let’s kick off with one of the most well-known universities in Munich, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, referred to by its students as the LMU.

A lot of universities like to talk about their rich history, but LMU can trace its history all the way back to 1,472! That’s almost 550 years of academic history.

Over this time, the university has expanded to over 18 faculties with a wide array of disciplines and points of research. The LMU prides itself on setting creative thinking, problem-solving and research as key focal points for all its courses.

English-taught courses at LMU

The LMU offers around 30 English-taugh Master's degrees. Most of these are focused on the Natural sciences (e.g. Biochemistry, Physics and Medicine), Computer and Data science, Economics and Management degrees.

As far as Bachelor's courses are concerned, LMU has countless bachelor-level courses that are taught in English, but unfortunately, no Bachelor's program is taught entirely in English.

To take a complete a Bachelor's degree at the LMU, sufficient knowledge of German language is required.

LMU Ranking

With this much history in diversity, it’s no surprise that LMU is well-regarded. In fact, according to the QS World University Rankings, it’s the 59th best university in the world!

Of course, rankings don’t say everything. But you can rest assured that LMU is a great place to develop your talents and create a solid base for a successful career in Germany.

2. Technische Universität München (TUM)

Another jewel in Munich’s educational crown is the Technische Universität München (TUM). As the name implies, this technical university specialises in courses in Engineering, Technology, and Natural sciences. In fact, the school produced 16 Nobel prize winners in these disciplines to date!

The TUM is a little younger than LMU, as it only earned the right to award doctoral degrees in 1901. The university has campuses both in the city centre and around 10 km outside of Munich, where it houses most of the faculties for the natural sciences. As an international, you don’t need to feel alone, as 35% of its 45.000 students were internationals__ in the 2020 academic year.

English-taught courses at TUM

The TUM offers 178 different degree programs, of which 76 are taught entirely in English. Most of the English courses are Master's level and only 6 are Bachelor's level.

TUM ranking

TUM was one of the first universities in Germany to be named a University of Excellence and is widely regarded as one of the best universities in Germany, ranking at 49th position worldwide. But, it excels in its specialised fields, where it’s the 20th university worldwide for Mechanical engineering, 15th for Physics and Astronomy, and 24th for Architecture.

So if the bleeding edge of technology and engineering is your future, the Technical University of Munich is the place for you!
