General Information

Campus Facilities

The Hague University of Applied Sciences’ main campus is located on the east side of the city centre, just a 2km walk from the very middle of The Hague. This prime location doesn’t hamper the university’s facilities, however, and there are restaurants, cafes (including the famous Lighthouse!), reading spaces and a sport centre where you can rent courts and use the gym at a discounted rate!

The Hague University has a few satellite campuses spread around the Netherlands (most notably in Delft), and these also benefit from student-oriented facilities to keep them fit, healthy and motivated.

Courses

If your Dutch is up to scratch and you can handle lessons in the native language, then virtually all of The Hague University’s courses should be open to you. For those international students without the linguistic skills, there are nine different international bachelor’s degrees taught in English:

  • Industrial Design Engineering

  • Process and Food Technology

  • International and European Law

  • Safety and Security Management Studies

  • European Studies

  • International Communication Management

  • International Public Management

  • International Business and Management Studies

  • International Financial Management and Control

If you’re looking for higher level study, there are also three international master’s programmes:

  • Masters of Business Administration (MBA)

  • Masters in International Communication Management (MICM)

  • Master of Financial Management and Control

International Dimension

The Hague University is well-known for its diversity and welcoming attitude to international students. A full 400 (or so) students come here to study every year, from over forty different countries. The Erasmus programme is responsible for a large number of these students. As an exchange student, or someone looking to complete their entire degree in The Hague, you couldn’t choosing a better institution.

Getting Here

Just on the east side of the centre, the university is located behind the Hollands Spoor train station - take the Laakhaven exit and it’s a few hundred metres walk down the road! You can also land in the area by taking tram lines 1, 9, 15, 16 or 17. Additionally, being located in the city centre, you can travel on foot or by bike just as easily from just about anyway - cycling in particular is exceedingly popular in the Netherlands.

University Accommodation

Student Neighbourhoods

Despite being the third-largest city in the Netherlands, with a population of over half a million, The Hague feels much smaller. Armed with a bike, you can travel pretty much anywhere in under 15 minutes. Statistically, many students choose to live in one of the following areas:

  • Regentessekwartier

  • Zeeheldenkwartier

  • Laakkwartier

  • Bezuidenhout

However, since The Hague is so compact, there are no hard-and-fast rules about where students all live - they spread themselves out all over the place. As long as you find a nice apartment that’s within reasonable distance of the centre and your classes, you’ll have no problem socializing and seeing your fellow students the rest of the time!

Common Housing Practices

The most popular (aka value for money) accommodation option for students in the Netherlands is hospiteren - shared apartments with others students. As a rule, the incumbent students will advertise online through different platforms, including Housing Anywhere. You can find properties and check out pictures and bios before contacting the host, guaranteeing your safety and booking with our secure system.

Your peers will usually decide who gets the room (rather than the landlord) so if you get on well when you meet each other, you’re probably good to go!

Something to keep your eye on is the rent: what exactly is included in your monthly payment? Things like internet, water, electricity and other bills are often not covered, and could easily at an extra 20%+ onto your total. Make sure you agree this and have it in writing before handing over any money to avoid any nasty surprises.

Otherwise, finding accommodation in The Hague isn’t usually too difficult - there are loads of exchange students going both directions, and loads of rooms need filling. Expect to pay anywhere between €300-600 for a room in a shared apartment, but considerably more for a studio or one-bed place.

Student Associations

When you are a student at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, you can expect to find plenty of student organizations to offer you their assistance, with a majority located right in the centre of The Hague.

One of the most popular is ACKU, which can really boost your social and cultural calendar with options like theatre tickets, concerts, film events, exhibitions and fun-filled pub crawls.
