General Information

Campus facilities

The University College is located at the Erasmus University, with its main campus at Kralingse Zoom. But with its location in Rotterdam, Erasmus University College boasts a very central location. You can expect to find the Rotterdam Library, Markthal and the fresh market all in close proximity of Blaak.

The building has quite a history, built back in the 19th century, and it has been home to the Rotterdam Library since before World War II. In 1940, during the bombardments of Rotterdam, the building miraculously escaped, with only losing its bell tower as a result.

At the start of 2011, Erasmus University and the city of Rotterdam decided to plan to bring the Erasmus University College to the building, hoping to add the vibrant university energy to the city centre. Once again sharing knowledge to eager students in Nieuwemarkt, students began attending classes in 2014 at the new location.

Right inside the building of the Erasmus University College, students can relax in the small cafeteria, where they can indulge in a coffee before class or a snack with friends. However, if you want to find a quieter place to study, students can head over to the Rotterdam Library, which is just at the end of the street.

Whenever you’d like a more substantial meal or would like to have drinks with friends after class, there are many options within walking distance of the university. With the building being located in such a busy, colorful part of the city, you’ll easily be able to find restaurants, sandwich bars, supermarkets and shopping options within a few steps. So be sure to get out there and explore the local area! Learn more in our Rotterdam City Guide.

Courses

When studying at Erasmus University College (EUC), the time required to graduate with a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences is three years. Throughout the course of this time period, students will be required to take ACADEMIC Core Courses (ACC) that are mandatory, which will be the basis for your education and will provide the information you need to declare a Major.

All students may choose different paths, and their experiences may be quite different. But here is an example of what students can expect when studying at EUC:

First Year Summarized

During the first year at EUC, students will work on their Academic Core Courses, which will include five interdisciplinary courses. These courses will include large themes, covering a variety of disciplines. For those students taking Skill Courses, there will be different goals. The first will be for these courses to truly expand your potentials, allowing you to thrive in this type of setting, such as presenting, writing and referencing. Later in the course, you will begin to incorporate research. Finally, you will then add a touch of personalization by selecting three additional courses from EUC’s course catalog.

Second Year Summarized

During the second year at EUC, the students will begin to focus on Majors, including up to 10 courses that will offer the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills that you wish to specialize in. There are four different departments for Majors, including Life Sciences, Departments Economics and Business, Humanities and Social and Behavioural Sciences. Focusing on the areas of your Major, you will also apply

the values of qualitative research, which will allow for the increase of data when you begin your professional career.

Third Year Summarized

During the third year at EUC, students are really able to personalize curriculum choices. They can add a Minor, or they can double their Major or even utilize a student exchange programme. The studies will end with a Capstone project, which will be a time to showcase all that you have learned at EUC.

International dimension

Erasmus University College places a very important focus on its international dimension, whether during classes or with its plethora of social activities. Many courses are taught completely in the English language, with 50% of the students Dutch and 50% from international cities. This will enable you to engage with people from across the globe, exposing you to dozens of different cultures and fascinating ways of life.

University Accommodation

Student neighborhoods

Rotterdam is a large, bustling city, with plenty of unique neighborhoods to choose from. Students seem to prefer the areas of Kralingen, Coolhaven and Centrum. However, be sure to also check out the neighborhoods to the South of Rotterdam, as that they are still quite wonderful but much cheaper than some of the more popular areas.

To learn more about each neighborhood, check out our Rotterdam City Guide.

Common housing practices

Students should know upfront that finding housing in Rotterdam can be very difficult. It can be hard to locate a space that has all of the amenities that you have in mind. Plus, rooms rent out very quickly, so you really have to be on your toes to find adequate housing.

So, here are a few helpful tips to get you started!

  • It is never too early to begin looking! As mentioned above, finding housing in this vibrant city can be difficult, especially if you’re looking in the city centre or are on a tight budget.

  • Understand that, if you want to live in Kralingen or the city centre, rent will be higher than in other locales. Expect to pay between 500-600 euros, with apartments generally at 1500 euros.

  • The areas to the West and the South are often overlooked, but they offer nice affordable housing options.

  • Be sure to visit our website on a regular basis. Rooms can come and go faster than you can blink, so don’t let the perfect space pass you by! Some accommodations don’t even last a day! Plus, if you are looking in a popular area, always act at once, because another space may not pop up again for a while that matches your criteria.

Student Associations

While there are many student organizations in the busy student city of Rotterdam, the most well-known is ESN Rotterdam. Always present in all the faculties, expect a wide variety of events to keep your social calendar filled throughout the entire year. They even offer a "buddy system", so that incoming international students can easily acclimate to their new environments.

Another large association is International Students Rotterdam. They are also extremely active, hosting a slew of special events and activities to engage international students and fully immerse them in the Dutch culture.

Surely your social calendar will be packed with events, but don’t forget that there’s an entire city out there to explore! Read on in our Rotterdam City Guide.
