The village of Gorla was born and grew up right on the banks of the Martesana which carried water from the Adda to the Navigli area and on which part of the marble used to build the Milan Cathedral also travelled on special boats. The Martesana canal itself counts the great Leonardo da Vinci among its designers and today represents a great point of attraction. The route of the Martesana was dotted with suburban patrician villas built in the eighteenth century.
