An entire 135 m2 flat in a Bilbao building from the early 1900s, in Abando, right in the centre of the city. Coffered ceiling with its original rosette, a period fireplace still in place, and a floor-to-ceiling bay window in the living room that fills the whole place with light. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, for up to four people. Not a room and not a shared flat: the whole thing is yours. THE FLAT Nobody has stripped this place of its character. The mouldings and the wooden skirting are the originals, and the floors have just been sanded and refinished. The building rebuilt the bay window recently with double glazing, so the living room is both the brightest and the best insulated room in the flat. The main bedroom is en suite, with a large double bed and its own spacious bathroom. The second has two single beds. There is a second full bathroom and a kitchen of the size they used to build. Second floor, with a lift. FOR MONTHS, NOT FOR A WEEKEND We let this flat by the month, from two to eleven, to people coming to Bilbao to work or to study. It is laid out for exactly that: the bedrooms sit away from the street, and the rooms are generous enough that two or three people are not on top of each other for half a year. Fibre optic internet is already connected and working, so you open your laptop the day you arrive and there is nothing to set up. The gas heating is individual and you control it yourself. Pets are welcome. You come with a suitcase and that is it: washing machine, tumble dryer, kitchenware, bed linen and towels are all in place. THE AREA Abando is where Bilbao works, and it is what people mean when they say the centre. From the front door it is about five minutes on foot to Gran Vía and to Abando station, which connects the metro, the trains and the airport bus. The Jardines de Albia are around the corner, the old town and the Ribera market are across the bridge, and the Guggenheim is a fifteen-minute walk along the river. It is a residential part of the centre rather than a nightlife one, which is why it suits people who are here to work. You will not need a car. ABOUT THE PHOTOS They were taken before we finished the work that is going on now: since then the floors have been sanded and we are finishing the carpentry in the wardrobes and the kitchen.
